The Legend
Nobody has seen Mr. Torino.
He built the extraction team, trained it, and disappeared. This is how it started, which is also the reason it works.
The print shop on the east side
He came over from the old country with a trade in his hands and no English worth mentioning. Los Angeles, the eighties. He took a job in a print shop because the owner needed somebody who could run a press at night and did not ask questions about anything else.
The shop went under two years later. The owner locked the door on a Tuesday and did not come back.
Mr. Torino kept working. He finished every job that was already on the floor, on a press that was no longer his, for customers who no longer had anybody to call. Menus for a restaurant opening that Friday. A sign for a body shop with an inspection coming. Wedding invitations somebody had already sent the date out for.
He did not bill any of it. A closed shop was not their fault.
How the favors started
Word travels in a city like this, and it travels fastest among people who have been turned down.
A woman making handbags out of her garage came to him with drawings and no idea what to do with them. He built her a mark and a label and told her to pay him when it sold. It sold.
A carpenter who had been stiffed on a job came to him for a business card. He gave him a whole identity and asked for nothing except that he answer the phone one day.
That went on for years. Restaurants, body shops, contractors, dentists, a soccer club, a kid with a T-shirt idea. He almost never said no and he frequently forgot to invoice.
What that turned into
The restaurant has four locations now. The body shop runs a fleet. The woman with the garage sells in three countries. The carpenter builds retail interiors and employs nineteen people.
Every single one of them still picks up on the first ring.
That is the part nobody can buy. You cannot open an agency and purchase thirty years of people who owe you something. There is no vendor list that does what a favor does at eleven at night on a Friday.
He did not build a network. He did good for a very long time in a city with a long memory, and a network is what happened.
The standard
He was taught, in a place that took it seriously, that a man is only as good as his word and that you treat the person who cleans the shop the same way you treat the person who signs the check.
He ran the studio that way for twenty years. Tell the truth about the timeline. Say the number out loud and then honor it. Never repeat what you heard in somebody's conference room. Never leave a client standing in a room you talked them into.
Dominate the work. Do good. Always.
He is said to have fired a client once for being rude to a printer. The printer still works with us.
The butlers
He never called them staff. He called them butlers, and he meant it as the highest thing he could call somebody.
A butler knows what the house needs before anybody asks. He handles it without a meeting about handling it. He is in the room for every important conversation and repeats none of it. He is not a servant. He is the reason the evening goes well and nobody notices why.
He trained them for years. How to read a situation in a day. How to tell somebody the truth about their deadline. Who to call at midnight, and what you have to have done for that person, years earlier, to be allowed to.
The butlers are the extraction team. Ed Gabrielyan is his right hand and runs the floor.
Off the grid
One day he handed over the keys and went somewhere with no address.
Nobody has seen him since. His butlers have. That is the entire list, and it is not going to get longer.
There is no photograph of him on this website, and there will not be one.
What he left behind
A studio that can put designers, developers, photographers, printers, carpenters and crew on a problem inside a day.
Thirty years of people who answer the phone.
And a rule nobody here has broken: we do not break our word. Not for a bigger client, not for a better margin, not at eleven at night when it would be easier.
Do good long enough and it becomes an unfair advantage.
